Survival will not be named as such if it does not meet the needs of a person. Therefore, each kit must contain basic items that will help and not hinder a person’s survival. For shelter and protection, kits must include blankets, lightweight tents, tie-tapes, rain coats, and/or waterproof pillows. When preparing things needed for sleeping or shade, take note the number of people that will occupy or use the shelter. If there are more than five members in a family, choose larger kinds of tents.

When warmth is vital, it will be best to include waterproof matches, cigarette lighter, and fire piston (Ferro cerium rod) to make fire. For injuries and other medically related needs, survival kits require supplies for first aid including, but not limited to bandages, gauze pads, adhesive tape, surgical razor, gauze tape, disinfectant pads, band-aids, latex/rubber gloves, antibiotic cream, rubbing alcohol, aspirin, medical tweezers, sterile dressing, medications/creams for allergies, suture kit, tablets for diarrhea or infection, sunscreen lotion, and supply of prescription medicines.

To maintain energy needs, food and water supplies are included.  Every survival kit must contain energy-enriched foods that can last for days, water in sealed containers, water purification tablets, canned foods, and other ready-to-eat foods. When the supply can no longer meet the needs of the survivors, items such as heavy duty aluminum foils, fishing tools and lightweight traps will assist in providing food and water.

To ask for rescue, consider bringing compass, whistles, signal mirrors, LED lights, flares, laser pointers, and surveyor’s tapes to mark locations. These will help when lost in the wilderness or when locations are unreachable by response teams. Other items that must be include in survival kits are trash bags, multi-tool knives, durable needles, Swiss Army knives, candles, sturdy cords, and small axes.

Disasters are wide ranging which can be caused by human negligence, corporate activities (mining), natural movements within the earth’s crust, etc. With all those occurring catastrophes, most survival kits differ depending on the situation and necessity. Here are some of the common types:

Earthquake survival kits, for instance, are those sets of supplies prepared in advance to meet needs during the repercussions of destructive earthquakes. Experts recommend families to prepare ready-to-eat food and water supply including water purification tablets and water filters good for one week. Also include first aid kits, flashlights, sanitary bags, extra long lasting batteries, goggles, whistles, extra cash, dust masks, and battery-powered radios. When there are missing family members, keep family photos. Furthermore, secure insurance files and other documents.

Wilderness survival kits, on the other hand, are helpful when lost during camping, tours and field trips. Like other kits, food and water are both essential. Other essential items include compass, tents, flashlight, waterproof matches or lighters, flares, Swiss knife, fishing tools, small candles, first aid kit, and survival guides. Actually, there are pre-packed survival kits available for campers and tourists.

Military survival kits often depend on team operations and locations. For instance, in deserted places, supplies kits must have the basics like water and food items. Useful items like compass, whistle, matches, sunglasses, portable shelter (tents), and medical kits are also included.
